We’re Ryan and Jess Thomas, the visionaries of Campground Island. In late 2021, we discovered what one guest lovingly called “the most beautiful dump”—a forgotten, overgrown piece of land that had once been a thriving campground. But we saw something else: potential, beauty, and a chance to build something lasting for our family and community. So with the support of Ryan’s parents, Greg and Trich Thomas—who believed in our vision from day one and partnered with us in the acquisition—we got to work!
We’ve spent every season since pouring our time, sweat, and heart into restoring this land—clearing brush, updating utilities, and welcoming campers who feel more like guests in our home.

History…
Campground Island, formerly known as Conewago Isle Campground and before that Flo-De-On. This campground has a rich history as it was the first campground in York County! Originally built by Floyd Shoemaker in 1966 and named Flo-de-on, was an icon in the area. It was known by its two metal grated bridges and two dams. Unfortunately, after only a few years of ownership, the infamous hurricanes Agnus, then a few years later Frederic, that wiped out a lot of York County completely overran this new campground. Floyd however, must’ve loved this venture and went on to build Pine Hill RV Park and then Cedar Lake Campground and finally selling the island to John Lupse. Conewago Isle Campground was the new name and was another local families adventure that lasted for decades.
